Cannot connect to Windows 10 or 11

Hello,

I purchased two Thunderbolt 3 Two-Slot M.2 NVMe SSD Enclosures, to fit 4 Samsung 980 pro SSDs. The enclosure can be recognized by Macbook Air M1 successfully. However, it cannot be recognized by either Alienware R11 or Asus Zephyrus gx531. I tested on both Windows 10 and Windows 11 with the latest driver updates.

On my Alienware R11, it shows the following driver error: Unknown USB Device. On my Asus, it does not show anything at all.

Please advise. Thanks in advance!

You're most welcome, Peng Jiang. The mystery is finally solved. We missed that important part out. Alienware Aurora R11 has only the USB-C port, but it doesn't have a Thunderbolt 3 controller. =)

Hello Peng Jiang, I totally forgotten about the file format side. When you're using it on your Mac normally, it definitely means it's being formatted to APFS; and you'd need to install APFS for Windows to make it detect your disk. Try it and let us know? =)

How it Works

1) Install. Download and install APFS for Windows by Paragon Software.

2) Connect. Connect your APFS drive to your PC.

3) Use. Your drive will show up in Explorer.

Thanks for providing the support. I think I finally figure out the reason..it seems my Alienware R11 does not support thunderbolt 3... I need to add a separate pci-e thunderbolt 3 controller to connect with this device.

Hello Choon,

Thanks for your help. I have tried all four steps mentioned above more than once. Unfortunately, it still not be recognized in the disk manager in either my Alienware or ASUS laptop (for both enclosures).

Just an FYI - I am able to connect both enclosures to my Mac OS and create Raid 0 partitions to make sure all 980 pros are functional. But just cannot read the device on my Windows.

Hello Peng Jia, thank you for the message~ Just to double confirm with you, the drive appears in Device Manager, but is not displayed in File Explorer, right? If it is, then it's the common "Windows Doesn’t Automatically Assign Drive Letters" problem that some has faced before. Thanks for the response! Unfortunately, I cannot follow the steps as nothing showed up in the disk manager. I tried both the GUI approach and cmd approach but cannot find the new volume connected via the type-c port.

I only find the error: Unknown USB Device, in the Device Manager.
